To top off a busy beginning of the year of travel we decided to plan a weekend in Los Angeles. When we booked the travel it wasn't clear just how bad the weather in Toronto would be and luckily California had some of the consistently warmest winter weather. After staying at a new hotel amazingly within easy walking distance of LAX, on Saturday we headed up the coast along Highway 1. We turned around where the road was washed out and stopped for lunch and explored downtown Santa Monica. On our way back south, we stopped in Torrance to witness the remains of a recent explosion at the refinery, which left quite stark remains. Given what the site looked like, it is amazing that no one was seriously injured. We headed for Long Beach and spent the rest of the trip in the area before our Sunday flights home.

After a night by the airport, drive up the coast past Malibu and back to Long Beach.
